Welcome to Morgenlicht Retreat Center. Our name is a german phrase translated as "Morning Light" and we started our activities in 1996. The creators of Morgenlicht, Martina Willach Galliez, a therapeutic masseuse from Germany and Carlos Cesar Galliez, medical doctor and psychotherapist specialized in Bioenergetics Analysis from Brazil, met at the Esalen Institute, California in the 1980's. That encounter led to her moving to Brazil, their forming a new family and subsequently settling down in Barra Alegre, near Nova Friburgo, in the mountainous area of the state of Rio de Janeiro, where they have resided since 1992. The two personally direct the space. From early on, they understood the importance of respecting and interacting with the local Barra Alegre community and were conscious of being generators of economic and educational growth in the area. With that mindset, they were founders and have been active members of the Barra Alegre Association of Residents, Farmers and Craftsmen. The youngsters who were engaged in Morgenlicht’s construction learned a new trade, and today are professionally well-established in the region. Those who ended up joining Morgenlicht’s staff have brought their sincere and demeanor which, combined with continuous training, have given an unique flavor to our relationship with our guests. We’ve also tried to harmoniously integrate its architectural design by Cydno Silveira, Amelia Toledo’s entrance panel, and the works of art that decorate its interiors all with Nature, inviting interior and exterior vistas in a continuous contact with beauty. Rooms
Morgenlicht welcomes, always on an exclusive basis, groups of 10 people or more, and can comfortably accommodate up to 26 guests in double or triple apartments with private baths and warm water heated by solar panels. Three additional guests can be accommodated in an independent suite at the main house of Fazenda Cachoeiras, 5 minutes away from Morgenlicht.
All apartments face a large deck. That invites to the contemplation of the beauty of nature. Their interiors are decorated with art and natural fibers are used in bed and bath materials. We are prepared to host guests who use wheelchairs.
The Food
We offer to our guests three full daily meals, coffee breaks and snacks, served at the dining hall self-service buffet. Vibrational Kitchen is how we call our cuisine, prepared with fresh products from our organic vegetable garden, combined with locally-grown fruits and produce, white meat and local dairy products.
Every meal is accompanied with fresh fruit juice. Our natural spring water is complimentary, and we also serve our own coffee, herb teas, honey, eggs, jellies and yogurt. We can accommodate each group's specific dietary needs, including raw food diet.
Lounge Room
The main lounge room, fitted with a fireplace and lounge music, offers an elegant and warm atmosphere, an ideal setting for social interaction among friends, or work companions. The same room doubles as a home theater or a ball room.
Work Room
Our octagonal work room, located at the second floor of Morgenlicht, is surrounded by a deck with sweeping mountain views. It is a 70 m² (755 sq. feet) spacious room, with hardwood floor, warmed by a fire place, fitted with a stereo system, a flip chart, a white board, as well as a 29' TV and DVD. It allows for a wide range of set ups: pillows and mats, chairs or tables and chairs, comfortably accommodating up to 30 people. The exquisite acoustic of this room is perfect for musical and singing groups, and the silence outside facilitates focus and interaction.
